Jamie Stenner : Questions and Answers by Henri Johnson
- How you doin' Jamie?
I'm cool cheers, you good?
- How old are you now?
Just turned 27, 30's creepin'
- Let's get straight to it - I laugh when I think of you in Bognor Regis, why d'you still live there?
(laughs) This always comes up - family, friends, work and familiarity I guess. It's just where I'm from - Bognor's finest!
- 2010 was a big year for you - married, pro, flow - is being AIL pro exactly how you imagined?
Nothings changed really, it's given me some inner peace. I conquered a life goal, something to tell the grand kids ya know...
- I heard you got a tattoo to celebrate, right?
Yeah man "love those boots" is donned on my left forearm. Checked that Tuffers and Sharpy were both cool with it first then got it done in Venice Beach before we left Cali.
- I found out you got Razor flow on Facebook, most of the posts were along the lines of "about time" - how's it going?
So far so good, I'm really juiced to be representing for them! I got a lot of props on Facebook that meant a lot to me. Kind words from people who know / care, it kinda reminded me of the early days of blading when the community felt more like a family. I got sent one of the Humble 5 backpacks that had my name embroidered on the front as a late crimbo present from the Razor boss - nice touch.
-What d'you like most about your current set up?
The feel, the S.L. boot is exactly what I want - supportive, low to the ground and wide fitting. They seem a 'lil faster than my Bambricks and although the lace up liner takes longer to put on / take off, I know that they won't go sloppy when they soften up.
- I'm sure you've seen Game Theory, what d'you think?
Sick, an epic build up to the Princes' section, not to big on the sound track and the fact there's no Murda or Chaz section... Mathias', J-Bah and Dre's sections stand out to me - but Aragon's takes the cake!
- I think of you as a park skater, but remember some clips in 'Teem' and saw some vert in your Aragon 4 review - what d'you like to skate the most?
I like rolling! The feeling of putting my boots on and cruising with my mates - amazing! I don't skate street much at the minute, less patient now so not as eager to sit in a car for 4+ hours just to skate one spot. My love for vert is growing as I get stronger on my skates, I can do 2-3 walls now before my legs are over...
- I've seen you in a few of the WinterClash edits online, looks hectic - how was it?
Long, we were in the park for 12 - 13 hours each day. Area 51 is a sick park though, all the ramps join seamlessly making it real fast. It's always good to have a load of your mates that you don't get to see enough all in the same place at the same time. Catching up, chillin', cruising, partying - it's what blading's all about! Plus Aragon did one of the best flat 5's I've ever seen!
- You've been in the game for over a decade now, what's your inspiration to keep skating / progressing?
I'm still having fun, and the whole time that's the case then I won't stop. I think I skate differently now, with my main interest being on lines and technique. I try to be as rounded as possible, to skate everything both ways is the dream. Sagona said as you get older you have to "skate smarter"
- good words of wisdom!
- What's the normal daily routine for Jamie Stenner?
Most days I'm up early and answering e-mails, get to the store (everythingesp.co.uk) about an hour before it opens to run through orders, re-plen stock and get a coffee etc, then help everyone out, fit parts, book in orders etc throughout the day. If it's dry then I try to cruise a park of an evening.
- Work comes up in most conversations we have, is it hard juggling between running your store and getting to skate?
The hard part is finding a good balance, ESP by far takes most of my time daily, I skate at most opportunities available. But I also wanna chill with my wife and family, spend time with my nephews watching them grow up and all that...
-When did ESP open?
ESP originally opened in Bognor mid '95 with the Chichester store opening later that year, the Bognor store closed in the early 2000's, but we've been supporting the scene on the south coast from Chichester since then.
- D'you ever loose sleep over the business side of skating?
Yeah, I think I've gotta get better at time management 'cos I'm the sorta guy who'll work 24/7 if that's what it takes to get the job done, customer service is what I pride ESP on - so if that mean late finishes early starts, so be it...
- If skating wasn't a big part of your life, d'you think you'd of travelled much as you have?
I don't think so, most of the times me and Rikki have gone somewhere it's usually based around a spot / comp / demo or whatever - so no skating would probably have meant no travelling.
- Outside of rollerblading, what else are you interested in?
Life, music, family, friends, business, photography...
